Green Roof Renaissance

Dusty Gedge, president of the European Federation of Green Roof Associations, is on a mission to create wild, new urban canopies for wildlife habitat, for growing food—and for staying cool.

Dusty Gedge started as a green-roof campaigner and founder of, an independent green-roofs association that promotes green roofs and walls in the UK. His journey to roofs was through his passion for nature conservation and biodiversity.

Dusty is president of the European Federation of Green Roof Associations and was instrumental in helping establish the UK Green Roof Code. As a designer, he has worked on more than 300 projects over the years, including some of the seminal green roofs in the UK for biodiversity. He is currently working on projects in Serbia, Spain, Turkey, Wales, and of course in London.

In 2004, he was awarded the Andrew Lees Memorial Award at the British Environment and Media Awards in recognition of his work on urban biodiversity. As an ex-actor/circus-performer, he is also a recognized international speaker, who mixes humor/entertainment with a detailed focus on how green roofs can be an important part of urban ecosystem services and adaptation to climate change.
