We are seeking a temporary editor to join the small, committed team that produces Conservation magazine. The magazine is in a strategic planning and fund raising mode to expand circulation, cultivate new partnerships, and develop a University of Washington speaker series that complements the print product. This position is initially for six months but could be extended depending on availability of funding.

Responsibilities:

  • developing story ideas as well as assigning, editing, and writing copy
  • developing articles across multiple platforms (print, online, and as part of a speaker series)
  • canvassing numerous journals and news sources for story leads
  • cultivating and maintaining relationships with writers
  • conducting background and photo/illustration research
  • assisting in production (e.g., design, fact checking, proof reading, etc.)

What we’re looking for:

This is an entrepreneurial venture. It is an opportunity to development new ways to communicate conservation science. We’re looking for people who are nimble, excited to roll up their sleeves, and who have an interesting combination of talents and interests, ranging from writing and design to web development and fundraising.

An ideal candidate will have:

  • a degree in life science and demonstrated knowledge/background in conservation science
  • editorial and writing skills—e.g., the ability to spot a story, frame a story, fix a story, write a story, match a writer to a story….
  • research and sleuthing skills with a dose of tenacity (on- and off-line)
  • an eye for design (proficiency with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. is a plus) —design is not an afterthought but an integral part of the magazine.
  • initiative, original ideas, and a passion for great thinking and writing
  • flexibility to accommodate heavy and sometimes irregular work loads—and be comfortable with shifting priorities and the ambiguity and creativity inherent in an entrepreneurial operation.

This is a temporary full-time position based at the University of Washington in Seattle. There are great benefits. It’s a great workplace. And this is a tremendous opportunity to be a part of a small, committed team building a world-class magazine with a mission.
