Robert Wielgus studies bears as well as cougars, and his research suggests a similar pattern for bear populations. For example, he compared a protected population of grizzlies in Idaho with a hunted population in Alberta, and found that people were seeing more tracks and bears in the Alberta population even though the female bear population was declining. He suspects the people were just seeing a lot of wide-ranging teenage male bears.

Scientists once believed that trophy hunting of older grizzly bears would increase the number of cubs by reducing competition and cannibalism. But when hunters kill the older grizzlies, younger males disperse into their territories and try to kill any cubs they find. Females flee and the end result is fewer cubs.

Excellent article. I am particularly struck how this could all apply to bears. The median age of male bears killed in CA is only 2.9 years old.
60 % of the bears killed are males. As bears are being forced out of their habitat due to its degradation by a variety of events like fires, drought, hounds, hunters and poachers in off road vehicles, more people & human encroachment, roads, etc. etc. it is alleged that bears are coming into towns more frequently and getting into garbage.
The CA Dept. of Fish and Game and other media sources are taking this to mean that there are more bears. I doubt this very seriously, especially after analyzing the CA DFG's own statistics. The bear population, I believe until proven wrong, is on the verge of a crash.
The gun industry and hunters are trying to promote the high population figures and the idea that bears are dangerous predators.
This could further exacerbate a bad situation.
Again, thank you for this excellent article and I hope there will be more like it.
